Tottenham Hotspur finally achieved another victory on Sunday. The also ailing Newcastle United turned out to be the ideal opponent: they came away with a 4-1 defeat in North London. As so often this season, Heung-min Son was the star at Tottenham. Richarlison scored again, even twice.

After a dazzling start to the season, Tottenham had gone into freefall. They have only achieved one point in the past five matches and have slipped from the top position to fifth place, which does not even qualify for Champions League qualification. Perhaps it had everything to do with the injury of Micky van de Ven, who has been sidelined since November with a hamstring injury.

Opponent Newcastle, where Sven Botman has been missing since September, was in similar form. Also the Magpies managed to win only two of the last six matches, resulting in seventh place in the rankings.

It was therefore a matter of guessing who would take the lead on Sunday. That turned out to be, undeniably, Tottenham. Ante Postecoglou's team was on top from the start and scored the opening goal halfway through the first act.

Son received the ball on the left from Destiny Udogie and fooled Kieran Trippier with a scissor move. Udogie had now moved on to meet the South Korean's pass from close range: 1-0.

However, it was just the beginning of Son's masterclass. Twelve minutes after assist one, the star striker sought out Trippier again, with a copy of the first goal as a solution. The only difference was that Richarlison made it – his first for Tottenham since September.

The evening became even better for the Brazilian. After a strong start to Newcastle's second half, he ended all the visitors' hopes. Pedro Porro had a phenomenal through ball, which Richarlison controlled and tapped past Martin Dúbravka with his left: 3-0.

This put an end to all illusions at Newcastle. Son even made it 4-0 (penalty kick), although Joelinton did score a goal of honor. Eddie Howe's team sees the Spurs thus closing in by three points on number four Manchester City, which managed to beat Luton Town (1-2) on Sunday. Liverpool will lead the Premier League after this weekend, with Arsenal and Aston Villa following in their wake.
