Cristian Stellini has been fired by Tottenham Hotspur, the London club confirms through official channels. The decision of the Spurs is remarkable, because the interim coach was only responsible for the group of players for a month. Tottenham now opts for Ryan Mason as temporary trainer.
Chairman Daniel Levy explains why Stellini was sent away. “Sunday’s performance against Newcastle was completely unacceptable,” said the flamboyant president. “It was devastating to watch. We can think of many reasons why it happened and while myself, the board, the coaches and players all have to take collective responsibility, ultimately that responsibility rests with me. I have decided that Cristian will step down from his duties We thank him for his time at the club.”
The selection of Tottenham Hotspur will therefore have to deal with its third coach of this season. Antonio Conte could not bring the sought-after successes to North London and was fired at the end of March. Stellini had come to Tottenham with Conte in 2021 and temporarily took over the honors. That did not go as desired, with last Sunday’s game against Newcastle United as an unprecedented low. Tottenham were 5-0 down within twenty minutes and eventually lost 6-1.
The Spurs choosing as stated for Mason as interim coach to finish the season. The former midfielder of the club was also temporarily at the helm two years ago, when Jose Mourinho was fired due to disappointing performance. Mason now faces the huge task of securing a Champions League ticket with Tottenham. After the defeat against Newcastle, the number five in the Premier League is six points behind Manchester United, which also has a game more in credit.
