Sheffield Wednesday have won the semi-final of the play-offs to gain promotion to the Championship in an unprecedented fashion. Manager Darren Moore’s team lost the first leg 4-0 against Peterborough, but won 5-1 on Friday evening. The Owls eventually won after penalty kicks. In the final, Sheffield will face either Barnsley or Bolton Wanderers.

Sheffield faced an almost impossible task to brush away the painful 4-0 defeat at home at Peterborough. However, Michael Smith scored an early opening goal with a converted penalty kick, after which Lee Gregory was able to double the margin before the break. It remained 2-0 until Reece James really gave the home team hope in the 71st minute by signing for the 3-0. Faith then seemed to disappear, until Liam Palmer brought the stadium into ecstasy in the eighth minute of stoppage time: 4-0.

In any case, Sheffield already dragged out an extension. In this, Peterborough seemed to be on its way to Wembley, after Gregory, the maker of the 2-0, scored an unfortunate own goal. Sheffield then fought back again. Callum Paterson determined the final score in regular playing time at 5-1, so a penalty shootout had to offer a solution. Where Sheffield used all his penalties, Dan Butler missed on behalf of the visitors with a shot on the crossbar. The Owls staged one of the greatest comebacks in the history of English football at home. Delirious with joy, the fans of the home team then stormed the field. Sheffield will face Barnsley or Bolton Wanderers at Wembley next week, who will play the return on Friday evening after a draw in the first leg (1-1).
