The top match between Ajax and PSV on Sunday was the most watched Dutch league match ever. That reports ESPN Monday morning. 1.510.000 viewers saw how Ruud van Nistelrooij won the clash with Alfred Schreuder with 1-2. The previous record was already in the name of Ajax – PSV and dates from almost two years ago.

The last time the viewing figure record was broken was in the first Eredivisie weekend of 2021. Then the former FOX Sports had just continued as ESPN. 1,458,000 viewers watched at the time how Ajax and PSV drew 2-2. Before that, the record was ‘in the hands’ of De Classicer of October 27, 2019, where 1,419,200 people watched.

The current record was broken on Sunday with a number of no fewer than 52,000 viewers. That just doesn’t match the amount of spectators in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. There 55,865 Ajax supporters (PSV fans were not welcome) saw their club lose out against the Eindhoven visitors. The next game in which two clubs from the traditional top three will play is scheduled for January 22. Then Feyenoord will meet Ajax in De Kuip.

Luuk de Jong gave his team the lead in the ArenA halfway through the first company on Sunday. Five minutes after the break, Érick Gutiérrez doubled the margin. Lorenzo Lucca, who came in for Dusan Tadic, brought the tension back for a while in the final phase, but in the end the three points went to North Brabant. PSV took over the lead from Ajax with the win.
