Villarreal’s Europa League win is a loss for PSV. Due to the victory of the Spaniards (after penalties) against Manchester United, the Eindhoven team already start in the second heat of the Champions League. PSV will play against Rapid Wien, Galatasaray or FC Midtjylland. In the event of a loss, a play-off round for the Europa League group stage follows. If things go wrong there again, PSV will miss out on a European campaign completely.

If Manchester United had won the Europa League, PSV could enter the third heat. That is not the case, so the Noord-Brabanters start in the second heat. PSV can only draw lots with unseeded status: Rapid Wien, Galatasaray and FC Midtjylland. In any case, PSV will not play against Celtic and Sparta Prague, the other seeded clubs. In the event of a loss in this round, PSV must continue in the play-offs of the Europa League.

If PSV survives the second heat, the club will go to the third heat with an unseeded status. PSV can play against Shakhtar Donetsk, Benfica, AS Monaco and Racing Genk in it. If Celtic survives the second preliminary round, the Scots will take over the seeded status of Genk. The other club that, besides PSV, is already certain of an unseeded status is Spartak Moscow. The four clubs that remain decide in the play-offs who the two get tickets for the group stage. The four losers go to the group stage of the Europa League.

PSV is therefore not yet assured of a European campaign. UEFA announced this week that a starting premium of 3.63 million euros is available for all participants in the group stage of the Europa League. PSV could count on an amount of around 1.5 to 2 million euros based on its coefficient, plus another approximately 1 million euros in TV rights. In the Champions League, those amounts are much higher: the starting premium there is 15.64 million euros. Based on the coefficient, PSV was expected to receive another 15 to 20 million euros in the billion-dollar tournament, plus approximately 1 million euros in TV revenue.
