Anwar El Ghazi shared via Instagram on Tuesday evening a series of abusive messages he received from a user. The Aston Villa attacker is berated and wished to death in the messages. “This is why we boycott social media,” El Ghazi writes in his Instagram Stories post.

A user with an open profile, judging by his profile information and now shielded photos, a young boy from Israel, called El Ghazi ‘a piece of shit’, accompanied with poo emojis, called him ‘ugly and stupid’ and wished him dead. “Welcome to our world, where we deal with these kinds of messages every day,” writes El Ghazi. Earlier in the day, he spoke out for the Palestinian cause after rocket attacks between Israel and the Gaza Strip. El Ghazi shared a message saying, “You don’t have to be a Muslim to stand up for Gaza, you just have to be human.”

English football was united for four days earlier this month in a social media boycott. The clubs from the Premier League, the English Football League and the Women’s Super League were silent on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. El Ghazi participated in that boycott as a player of Aston Villa.
