Mats Wieffer will face a dream transfer to a European top club within two to three years, his former trainer Theo ten Caat predicts. The 23-year-old midfielder is currently impressing at Feyenoord and is also part of the pre-selection of the Dutch national team. “If he can continue this line, he will leave Feyenoord within two to three years,” expects Ten Caat, who trained Wieffer with the reserves of FC Twente.

“Actually, he has all facets of football,” says Ten Caat in an interview ESPN about Wieffer. “He is technically very skilled, has great running ability, sees the spaces very well and is quick with his ball handling. And he’s a stubborn little guy too.” Wieffer played for six years in the youth of Twente and, according to Ten Caat, formed a golden duo with Ramiz Zerrouki. “They were lord and master.”

The ex-trainer had hoped that the two had now played together in the first team of Twente. Wieffer, however, opted for a switch to Excelsior and, after two excellent seasons with the Kralingers, earned a transfer to Feyenoord last summer. “I am still a real Twente supporter, so it hurts me a lot to see Wieffer play in Feyenoord’s shirt. As much as I wish it for him, I would have preferred him to play in Twente’s midfield together with Zerrouki.”

Ten Caat believes that Wieffer has the potential to play for a European top club in a few years. “Within two years he will go from the reserves of Twente to the pre-selection of the Dutch national team. If he can continue this line, he will leave Feyenoord within two to three years and he will play at an international level. Maybe Champions League.” And which club should that be at? “I think he fits very well with Bayern Munich. He has a lot of qualities for the German Bundesliga. Schalke was also chasing him for two or three years. Whether he can go for a million or thirty to forty? Yes, at least.”
