With the return of the Premier League, everyone is curious to know who will be Liverpool’s biggest challenger this season. The game of the reigning national champion against Chelsea may soon offer an answer. Liverpool seems to be the favourite in this game, but the experts saw Jürgen Klopp’s team almost stumble over the newly promoted Leeds United in Round 1, while Chelsea has been working on an impressive mercato since Timo Werner, Thiago Silva, Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell and Hakim Ziyech signed on with the club. The latter is unfortunately not there against Liverpool due to a knee injury, but there are plenty of stars left to look forward to. Will Chelsea hand out the first blow and will this be one, or will Liverpool show who is (still) the boss and fill in a tweet?

Liverpool travels to the capital knowing it won’t be easy on Stamford Bridge. Chelsea won the last six games in the Premier League on its own turf. And this while with Tottenham Hotspur, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Manchester City not exactly the smallest teams came along. Frank Lampard’s team also kept the zero in the last three home games; City-player Kevin De Bruyne was the last player to score at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea on 25 June, now 305 playing minutes ago. The Blues may be looking for a new goalkeeper, but in home games avoiding goals is no problem.

Is Chelsea extending the blessing series at Stamford Bridge? Here’s the quote for a home victory.

Chelsea unintentionally played a key role in Liverpool’s historic title last season: on 25 June, the London-based team defeated Manchester City 2-1, allowing the Reds to officially call themselves champion of England. With the champagne just behind them, Liverpool still had seven games to finish that season, a series that started with a 4-0 defeat at Man City. It was the start of a not-so-flattering series for the Liverpool-defense led by the normally so imperturbable Virgil van Dijk: since winning the national title, the team scored twelve hits in seven games. On top of that, Van Dijk and his team had a hard time last week against Leeds United and the Reds also scored three hits from the doctoral candidate.

Will Virgil van Dijk get the lock on the Liverpool defence back in time? Check the rating here for a clean sheet.

The refurbished Chelsea will therefore take on some new stars, while Liverpool will be leaning on the team that has been so successful in recent years. Of that team, Roberto Firmino and Trent Alexander-Arnold already proved themselves against Chelsea: both players scored in both the home and away game with Frank Lampard’s team last season. Perhaps Georginio Wijnaldum could also play a significant role. The midfielder in the spotlight in Barcelona scored three goals against Chelsea in the Premier League, only against Norwich City was Wijnaldum more likely (4 times). One of these goals came in the most recent edition between Liverpool and Chelsea: on 22 July Wijnaldum finished on the scoreboard in a spectacular 5-3 victory at Anfield.
