Devyne Rensch says he has difficulty with the criticism that has descended on Ajax in recent months. The defender commutes between the bench and the base and watches the Amsterdammers struggle. Last Sunday against PSV, Rensch was allowed to show it from the start. Wednesday evening should show whether he can keep his place, when Ajax takes on Vitesse in its own Johan Cruijff ArenA.

When asked whether Schreuder should be fired, Rensch responds with a resounding ‘no’ at The Telegraph. “Everything is just… Everything is okay..”, said the defender. “The criticism of Ajax affects me a lot. But yes, everything has a reason.” Rensch started the season as a right back, but has not been assured of his place on the right since the arrival of Jorge Sánchez. He therefore played against PSV from the left. Daley Blind, among others, was kept on the bench for ninety minutes. Owen Wijndal is expected to be back against Vitesse on Wednesday.

Berghuis looks back on the loss against PSV in conversation with the club channel. The people of Eindhoven were 1-2 too strong in the Johan Cruijff ArenA last Sunday. “I didn’t think PSV was much better than we were. It was a fairly flat game. Because of that 0-1 PSV pulls the momentum. We know that Gakpo likes to come in to give the cross to Luuk de Jong. Identical to the Johan Cruijff Scale. We are cutting ourselves back on that. We could certainly have won the match, but we have not made enough claims about that.”

According to Berghuis, there is confidence within the selection to turn the current situation around. “The noses are certainly in the same direction, but everyone is still disappointed. I have that feeling myself. From tomorrow (Wednesday, ed.) the switch has to be turned. We still have two important games to play that must be won.” Berghuis does not want to speak of an ‘rising line’. “You can’t say that if you lose matches against equal teams. We don’t have that line yet. We are working hard on that. That starts in training and has to be translated into the game.”

Berghuis refers to the fact that Ajax is ‘just’ the leader if Vitesse is beaten on Wednesday. The lead over PSV is then again one point. “We have to keep winning to stay there, that’s important.” Berghuis does not think the trend around Ajax is too negative. “You can just say what it is like, we do that too. But last year we went into the winter break with a disadvantage. Hopefully we can now enter the winter break with a lead. If you are at the top in the winter, you are doing well. But we cannot close our eyes to the fact that there is still enough development in the team.”
