Pablo Marí tells his story a day after the attack in Milan. The 29-year-old Monza defender, who was loaned out by Arsenal, was stabbed along with four others by a confused man. “I was with my wife and son and I was pushing the pram when I suddenly felt an unbearable pain in my back,” Marí said in a statement. La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Marí reveals the details of the horrific events. “Immediately after that, that man stabbed a girl in the throat,” said the Spaniard, whose injuries are relatively minor. “I was lucky myself, because I saw a person die before my eyes.” Marí ended up in hospital with a stab wound and had surgery on Friday. One person was killed, while the condition of two victims is still critical.

Adriano Galliani, director of Monza, expects Mari to be able to return to the football field soon. “He’s a great guy. He joked that he’s coming back to training on Monday,” Galliani said. “His teammates wanted to come to the hospital, but of course that is not possible. Silvio Berlusconi (the owner of Monza, ed.) also gives him my regards.”

The perpetrator of the attack, a 46-year-old man, probably grabbed a knife from the store shelves. He was eventually stopped by bystanders and handed over to the police. One of those bystanders was Massimo Tarantino, former defender of Napoli and Bologna, among others. “‘He was yelling,” Tarantino said. “But I’m not a hero. It was nothing.”
