Devyne Rensch stands up for his teammates Silvano Vos and Josip Sutalo. The former defender made his return to Ajax on Thursday after a period of injury, but in his new role as a passing rearguard player was unable to prevent a defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion (2-0). “We were certainly not without a chance,” says Rensch Ajax Life.

Vos led into Ansu Fati’s 0-1 with a bad pass. Rensch does not blame his only eighteen-year-old teammate. “You never want to make a mistake. That’s difficult for such a young boy.”

“I also made mistakes when I was young. It is important that teammates support you. He will make more mistakes. And so will I. But you have to stay strong.”

Rensch also has an eye for his defense partner Sutalo. The Croatian was taken over from Dinamo Zagreb for at least 20.5 million euros this summer and started dramatically in Amsterdam, but according to Rensch he is recovering.

“You don’t get much time to get used to football,” Rensch says. “But he is a good boy and a good player. He needed time to adapt, but is playing better football now. I see him making progress.”

Rensch himself played centrally again after a long time. The Ajax player was instructed by John van ‘t Schip to move to midfield while in possession of the ball. Rensch regularly played at center back in the youth, but still had to get used to it.

“You have to make the switch in your head, especially when choosing a position. The trainer wanted to create one more man in midfield with me, so that I could show more in terms of football.”
