Erik ten Hag was crowned on Tuesday evening as the manager who was able to book twenty victories with Manchester United the fastest after his appointment. The Red Devils qualified for the semi-finals of the EFL Cup at home by beating Charlton Athletic 3-0. For Ten Hag, that meant the eighth win in a row as United manager, a rare run that had not been achieved at the club since January 2019.

At Old Trafford, United took the lead after 21 minutes on Tuesday thanks to a goal from Antony, after which Marcus Rashford asserted himself (only in stoppage time) by scoring the other two goals. Nevertheless, Ten Hag is satisfied with the outcome of the evening, he said at BBCRadio. “We got the job done. I think we should have finished it earlier, but in the end, getting to the semi-finals was the goal tonight and we succeeded. So congratulations to the team.”

The Manchester Evening News rewarded Ten Hag with a 7 after the game, because according to the local newspaper it was mainly due to the players that Charlton was not dealt the final blow earlier. In addition, Ten Hag’s choice to rotate is called a logical one. The manager from Haaksbergen gave the seventeen-year-old top talent Kobbie Mainoo a basic debut and had Facundo Pellistri make his debut in United’s shirt just before time. The latter gave the assist to Rashford’s liberating 2-0.

After 27 matches as manager of United, Ten Hag has an average of 2.3 points per game. He managed to win twenty matches, drew two and went down five times. Being in the Premier League the Red Devils in fourth place, nine points behind leaders Arsenal. In the Europa League, an intermediate round awaits next month in which Champions League dropout Barcelona is the opponent. United also participates in the FA Cup. On January 28, a home game with Reading follows in the fourth round of the classic cup tournament.
