Manchester United is closely monitoring the situation around Amourricho van Axel Dongen, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported on Wednesday. The club of manager Erik ten Hag knows that the contract negotiations with the attacker and his entourage are not going smoothly and that there is a chance that he can be picked up on a free transfer this summer. Romano emphasizes that more clubs have Van Axel Dongen on the list.

Romano reported on Tuesday that Ajax wants to break open Van Axel Dongen’s expiring contract and extend it until mid-2027. Whether there will be an agreement between the parties, however, is still the question. There is a gap between supply and demand, which threatens a transfer-free departure in a few months. Several European top clubs, including Manchester United, are keeping an eye on Van Axel Dongen and would like to sign him in the summer. The right leg, born in Almere, has been known as a top talent in Ajax’s youth academy for years.

Under Ten Hag, who worked at Ajax for more than four years, Van Axel Dongen even got the chance to make his debut in the main force of the team from Amsterdam. So far he has played in three official matches in Ajax 1, in which he was good for one assist. For Jong Ajax he scored three goals and four assists in 21 games. Incidentally, it is still unclear how concrete the interest from Manchester is and whether Ten Hag actually wants to make a bid for the Johan Cruijff ArenA.

Van Axel Dongen showed himself in front of the camera on Monday Football zone out about his future. “My goal is to succeed at Ajax anyway. Ajax is of course the most beautiful club in the Netherlands and the best club to show you. Right now I’m just busy with myself and trying to keep fit. I just want to play as many matches as possible now, so I’m not super busy with that (his expiring contract, ed.), but of course I just want to stay at Ajax.” In recent years, he has already appeared on the radar of several European top clubs.
