Yann Sommer is in the emphatic interest of Manchester United, reports ESPN. The Swiss, who was a basic player during the World Cup in Qatar, will be available on a free transfer next summer and manager Erik ten Hag would like to take advantage of this. The goalkeeper is currently under contract with Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he has been active since the summer of 2014. BILD previously reported that Ten Hag even sees him as the first goalkeeper because of his constructive qualities.

The 33-year-old Sommer would be a welcome reinforcement for Ten Hag, as the current goalkeeper situation causes a lot of uncertainty. For example, first goalkeeper David De Gea is under contract at Old Trafford until mid-2023, but talks about a possible extension have yet to be held. The club still has an option to extend the Spaniard’s contract until mid-2024. Second goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka was hired from Newcastle United for a year last summer. The Slovak only played in test matches and the EFL Cup the Red Devils.

It is therefore expected that the 33-year-old goalkeeper will return to Newcastle next summer. Dean Henderson, who is being stabled by United this season at Nottingham Forest, is expected back in Manchester next summer. If the arrival of Sommer is finalized, it would be the first English adventure for the Swiss. Before coming to Mönchengladbach, the veteran only played in the Swiss league, where he defended the club colors of FC Basel, FC Vaduz and Grasshoppers.

Last summer there was also talk of a possible transfer from Sommer to United, but that transfer did not take place. Sommer is the undisputed number one for both Borussia Mönchengladbach and Switzerland and would be constructively better than De Gea, something that Ten Hag considers important with his playing style. Sommer has made 272 appearances so far Die Fohlen, in which he kept a clean sheet 72 times. On behalf of Switzerland, he came to 79 international matches and kept his goal clean 31 times. Sommer could not prevent his team from being dried off in the eighth final match at the World Cup against Portugal: 6-1.
