Barcelona cannot register Ferran Jutglà and Abde Ez for the Europa League. UEFA rules state that clubs can only add three players to their European squad during the winter. At Barcelona, those places will in any case go to the acquisitions Dani Alves, Ferran Torres and Adama Traoré for the time being.

At the same time, it means that Barcelona may face a dilemma in the coming weeks. The Catalans would not be ready for the transfer market yet and if business is still done in the last days before the deadline, one or more acquisitions cannot be registered for the Europa League. According to reports from Spain, Barcelona wants to add at least one striker and a left back – a vacancy for which Ajax player Nicolás Tagliafico is emphatically in the picture – to the selection.

If there are actually more players to come, Barcelona will have to choose which of the signings will be registered. UEFA rules state that a maximum of three players may be registered during the winter transfer window. Those places are currently given to Alves, Torres and Traoré, which means that Jutglà and Abde, according to Sport will in any case not be eligible to play in the Europa League after the winter.

The pair cannot be registered as second-team players as they have not played for Barcelona for two years. Under UEFA rules, players can only be registered as such if they have been playing with a club for at least two years. Jutglà and Abde were taken over by Barcelona from Espanyol and Hercules last summer. Barcelona will take on Napoli in the intermediate round of the Europa League in February.
