Fenerbahçe failed to reach the semi-finals of the Conference League. The Yellow Canaries forced extra time after the 3-2 defeat against Olympiacos by winning 1-0 in Istanbul. No goals were scored in extra time. In the penalty shootout, misses by Dusan Tadic, Cengiz Ünder and Leonardo Bonucci proved fatal for Fenerbahçe. Olympiacos will face Aston Villa in the semi-finals.

On the Fenerbahçe side, former Eredivisie players Ferdi Kadioglu, Dusan Tadic and Sebastian Szymanski started in the starting line-up. Edin Dzeko was the striker on duty and was assisted by Irfan Can Kahveci on his right side. Jayden Oosterwolde was missing due to a knee injury, which he sustained in the first match against Olympiacos. The Greeks were missing the suspended Panagiotis Retsos and Ayoub El Kaabi was the deepest attacker.

Chiquinho provided the first serious danger in Istanbul. After a nice move to free himself, he ultimately shot over from a promising position. It was not the starting signal for a dominant phase for the visitors. In fact, Fenerbahçe took the lead early on. Irfan Can received the ball on the edge of the box and shot into the short corner: 1-0.

Fener tried to push through and fired a volley in the person of Fred, which flew wide. There was no real Turkish offensive, although Tadic and Kadioglu tried, in vain, to reach their teammates in a promising position. Olympiacos barely managed to create anything offensively and thanked goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, who saved on an attempt by Irfan Can.

Even after rest Fener the better, although the 2-0 did not come. Edin Dzeko saw his attempt stopped by a defender and moments later a nice cross from Tadic yielded just nothing. Olympiacos showed up again after about an hour of play. David Carmo headed wide and a minute later Rodinei shot wide.

The Greeks got into the match better and should have made it 1-1 through Georgios Masouras, who suddenly had plenty of space in front of him and came face to face with Dominik Livakovic. Not the Greek, but the Croatian emerged victorious and thus avoided a very dire situation for Fenerbahçe, which saw Michy Batshuayi's goal disallowed for offside a minute later.

There had to be an extension to determine the winner. In the first half of that extra time, Vicente Iborra came closest to scoring, but the ex-Sevilla and Villarreal player headed against the post. In the second half of extra time, Tadic shot wide by about a meter and a half. In minute 124, Olympiacos' Andreas Ntoi received his second yellow card and a penalty shootout was initiated. Tadic, Ünder, Bonucci, Youssef El Arabi and Rodinei were missing.
