AZ Under-12 won 39-2 against FC Groningen’s peers on Saturday, the Alkmaarders report on the club website. Despite the unprecedentedly large result, the ten and eleven-year-old players appear to be extremely self-critical, as is apparent from the interviews afterwards, to the surprise of ESPN commentator Mark van Rijswijk, among others.

“We have to show more initiative ourselves,” says Joey Plat, player of AZ Under-12, on the club website. “Our trainers were more energetic along the line than we were on the field. We need to get more out of ourselves, so that we need less coaching. We did better in the third block. Then we helped each other more in getting in front of the goal.”

Despite the 39 hits, Giel Kappelhof, who also plays for the AZ youth team, thought that his team should have finished the chances better. “We scored a lot, but there could have been more. I thought our fielding in defense and pressing went well and we gave each other a lot of support in attacking.”

On Twitter, people react with surprise to the deadly serious interviews of the ten or eleven-year-old football players. “The reactions of the children are the most hilarious,” said Van Rijswijk, reporter for ESPN. “Bizarre. My team is not even as self-critical after an 11-3 defeat as today. I especially hope that the children who won 39-2 have not gone to bed more disappointed than their opponents.” Jeroen Elshoff, who comments for the NOS, says: “I am a bit sad about this.”
