Luis Suárez will definitely return to Club Nacional in his home country of Uruguay, the striker announced via social media. With that, the 35-year-old Suárez returns to the club where it all started in 2005. After four official matches for Nacional, Suárez was taken over by FC Groningen for 800,000 euros at the time.

Due to his transfer-free status since his departure from Atlético Madrid, Suarez has been associated with many clubs. In a video on social media, he announced on Tuesday evening that he would definitely leave Europe behind. “The final details will be finalized in the next few hours.” It is not yet known until when Suarez will sign with Nacional. Uruguayan journalist Rodrigo Vázquez reported last Friday that it will most likely only be until the World Cup in Qatar.

The transfer-free attacker was already close to a move elsewhere in South America at the beginning of this month. Argentina’s River Plate was close to a stunt, but Suárez balked at a transition due to the Copa Libertadores elimination. According to Referí, sports section in the Uruguayan newspaper El Observador, there would be three more options that Suárez was considering. One was in Spain, the other two in Italy and the Netherlands. Given the generous salary of the top scorer, it seemed likely that the Dutch candidate was his former club Ajax, where he was active between 2007 and 2011.

Suarez can look back on a great career in European football. He was brought to the Netherlands by FC Groningen in 2006. A year later Ajax took him over for 7.5 million euros. Suarez played 159 official games for the team from Amsterdam, in which he scored 111 times and provided 68 assists. The Uruguayan was also a great success in England at Liverpool. For the past eight seasons, Suarez played in Spain with Barcelona and Atlético Madrid. He won the Champions League with Barca.
