Stevenage caused a thunderous stunt in the FA Cup on Sunday evening. The team of manager Steve Evans, who is active in League Two, was 1-0 down against Aston Villa in the 88th minute, but then created a miracle. It was a painful evening especially for Philippe Coutinho. Stevenage’s Twitter account poked fun at Aston Villa’s disappointing wing forward midway through the second half.

There seemed to be no problem for Villa, after Morgan Sanson gave the home team the lead against the fourth division team after half an hour. In the final phase, things still went wrong for manager Unai Emery’s team. Leander Dendoncker was shown a red card for knocking down Dean Campbell in the penalty area. The penalty was then used by Jamie Reid, after which the teams seemed to be heading for a draw, and therefore a replay.

In stoppage time, however, Stevenage turned the game completely upside down via Campbell, who managed to surprise goalkeeper Robin Olsen after a quickly taken corner kick in the short corner: 1-2. Villa had to swallow an embarrassing elimination at home, while the huge stunt was understandably celebrated afterwards by the fans of Stevenage who traveled along. In the fourth round of the FA Cup awaits Boro meeting with Stoke City.

Confidence at Stevenage was still high during the game with a 1-0 deficit, according to a tweet about Coutinho’s substitution. The disappointing Brazilian was substituted for Emiliano Buendía after 66 minutes, after he could not break any pots. “Philippe Coutinho is taken to the side. The change took longer than usual because they had to take it out of the pocket of our left back Luther James-Wildin,” Stevenage wrote on Twitter.
