The Premier League match between Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday has been canceled seven hours before kick-off. The Spurs had already asked for a postponement of the game at the English competition due to a corona outbreak in the selection, which was not honored, however. Now that Leicester has also been hit by the virus, the board of the Premier League is tackling.

Tottenham’s duels with Stade Rennes in the Conference League and with Brighton & Hove Albion in competition have already been canceled before. Tottenham wanted to use the date of their match with Leicester City to make up for the match with Rennes, so that the club would not face a regulatory 0-3 defeat in Europe. UEFA’s competition rules stipulate that all group matches in the Conference League must be completed before December 31. With a regulatory defeat of Tottenham, Vitesse would convert in Europe.

Brendan Rodgers expressed his dissatisfaction with the original decision of the Premier League the day before the mutual game. “We are not supported by the league,” the Leicester City coach said. Colleague Antonio Conte, however, showed more understanding. “Of course the Premier League did not want to postpone the game. We already have two league games to catch up (in addition to the Brighton game, the meeting with Burnley still has to be played, ed.). I can understand, we can understand.”

Calls for a complete shutdown of the Premier League are growing in England. Thomas Frank, manager of Brentford, opted earlier Thursday to cancel all weekend games. All matches in the EFL Cup the following week should also be postponed, according to the Danish coach. “We need a week to recover,” Frank said Sky Sports. “This way we can make everything clean and corona-free at the training complex and break the chain.”
