Stijn Schaars is the new second assistant national coach of the Dutch Juniors, the KNVB officially announced on Monday. The former midfielder of AZ and PSV, among others, is the successor of Peter Reekers in the technical staff of national coach Erwin van de Looi, who held this position for the past two years. Schaars will combine his work at the Dutch Juniors with his current position as assistant coach of PSV Under-18.

Schaars has signed a contract with Jong Oranje until the summer of 2022, the KNVB adds. The technical staff of Van de Looi also includes assistant coach Marcel Groninger and goalkeeper coach Sierd van der Berg. Schaars will join the Juniors at the beginning of September, which will play against Young Moldova on Tuesday 7 September as part of the European Championship qualifying cycle. The international match will be completed in De Adelaarshorst and will start at 6.45 pm.

The now 37-year-old Schaars played in his active career for Vitesse, AZ, Sporting Lisbon, PSV and sc Heerenveen. The former midfielder recorded 24 international matches for the Dutch national team and also played 20 times for the Dutch Juniors.
