Steven Bergwijn is not happy with the discussion ‘in the media’ surrounding his captaincy. After the lost match against PSV (5-2), the Ajax attacker expresses his irritation towards reporter Joep Schreuder, who stands in front of the camera of the NOS asks about Bergwijn’s feelings towards the band.

“I think it is of course an honor to wear the belt, but from the day I got it, the media have been asking whether I am a good captain,” says a very irritated Bergwijn. “Only bombs are thrown.”

“Your media is busy creating unrest. What makes a good captain? Are you there in the locker room? Oh no? What do you base it on? How do I walk around the field? I’m kind of done with it.”

“Ultimately we are all captains,” continues the winger. “It’s just a captaincy, you make it bigger than it is. From day one you have been throwing bombs and creating unrest. Now I’m done with it.”

Schreuder then continues about the alleged interest of various clubs from Saudi Arabia. Bergwijn also prefers not to hear questions about a transfer to the Middle East. “Nonsense. That’s what I say: throwing bombs, that’s what you’re good at.”

The reporter adds fuel to the fire: “A captain isn’t going to abandon his club, is he?” Bergwijn: “What I say: bombs. You are good at that.”

Finally, the captain discusses the areas for improvement for Ajax. “We can say a lot, but we just have to show it on the field. We still have two catch-up games and we just shouldn’t look at the rankings at all. We have to get ourselves back together.”
