UEFA is responsible for the unrest surrounding the Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid in Paris. This is according to a report that investigated the situation. UEFA itself would have insisted on an investigation and the results are disastrous for the European Football Association. “It is a miracle that there were no deaths,” it reads, among other things.

UEFA and French authorities blamed supporters who tried to enter the stadium without a ticket. “These are reprehensible allegations,” the report said. “UEFA itself bears primary responsibility for the disturbances that nearly led to disaster.” The game was postponed for half an hour due to the problems outside the stadium. Fans were trapped and sprayed with tear gas.

According to the report, UEFA made some big mistakes. For example, poor route planning, failing ticket systems and improperly performed checks are said to have been used. “All stakeholders have been questioned and called it a ‘near miss’, a term used when an event nearly turns into a mass lethal catastrophe. The parallels between Hillsborough 1989 and Paris 2022 are palpable.”

Theodore Theodoridis, Secretary General of UEFA, has gone through the dust in response to the report. “I would like to apologize in particular to the Liverpool supporters. For the experiences they had, but also for the fact that they were wrongly blamed.” The final at the Stade de France in Paris finally ended in a 1-0 victory for Real Madrid. Vinícius Júnior scored the only goal of the match.
