Sparta Rotterdam does not agree with a settlement proposal from the professional football prosecutor regarding a suspension for Aaron Meijers. The defender received a red card on Sunday in the home game against SC Cambuur (0-4 defeat) and will receive, if it is up to the prosecutor, a suspension of four games, one of which is conditional. Sparta thinks the punishment is too severe.

“The KNVB settlement proposal in which Aaron Meijers would receive a four-match suspension (one conditional) is not accepted. Both the player and the club believe that this punishment is disproportionate,” Sparta reported on Monday afternoon. As a result, the prosecutor will review the file again. He then has three options: he dismisses the case, makes a new settlement proposal or submits the case for consideration to the disciplinary committee with the same or a higher sentence.

Aaron Meijers’ violation can be seen from minute 1:17.

A frustrated Meijers kicked Tom Boere down in the final phase of the duel with Cambuur, after the Cambuur striker did not return the ball. After referee Martin van den Kerkhof was called off by video referee Rob Dieperink, the left back of Sparta was shown a red card and a disturbance arose on the field. It was Meijers’ second red card of his career, after he was sent off in September 2012 against sc Heerenveen (1-3 win) after two yellow cards.

With a suspension of four matches, one of which was conditional, Meijers would be absent from the away match against PSV (Sunday, October 3), the home match against FC Groningen (Sunday, October 17) and the away match against RKC Waalwijk (Saturday, October 23). He could then make his comeback on Sunday 31 October in front of his own audience in the city derby against Feyenoord. Meijers came over from ADO Den Haag last month, after he was already rented out to Sparta for a season.
