Sparta Rotterdam has successfully struck this transfer window for the third time. The number sixteen of the Eredivisie has strengthened itself for the rest of the season with Arno Verschueren, who is taken over from the Belgian Lommel on a rental basis. The 24-year-old midfielder will be definitively taken over by Sparta after his rental period, where he will be under contract until mid-2025. Earlier, Sparta was already able to strengthen itself with Younes Namli and Adrián Dalmau.

Verschueren thus returns to the Eredivisie. The midfielder wore the NAC Breda shirt between 2016 and 2020, before making the switch to the ambitious Lommel in the summer of 2020. Verschueren chose a return to his homeland rather than a longer stay at NAC. Lommel, which is part of the City Football Group, paid the Breda residents only a limited transfer fee. Now the midfielder continues his career in the Netherlands.

“It took blood, sweat and tears, but I am happy to be able to join Sparta,” Verschueren tells the Sparta club channel. “There was a moment of doubt whether it would go ahead, but I think it is a good deal. Sparta is a beautiful and interesting club. I think I am known for being able to make a lot of meters. I have that in show the past at NAC. That is a role that suits me. That is also the reason they brought me in. I am happy that I can play in the Netherlands again.”

“These were intensive negotiations in which the transfer fee that we have agreed upon ultimately demonstrates our ambitions to achieve a sporting result”, technical director Gerard Nijkamp adds. “Arno still had an ongoing contract, but we wanted to sign him as a Sparta player not only for the rest of the season, but also for the following seasons. With Arno we are strengthening ourselves with a multifunctional player who can be used in several positions. He has already proven himself at NAC Breda in the past at Eredivisie level, we believe that he will also show this in Rotterdam.”
