AZ is in the quarterfinals of the Conference League. After the 1-2 win in Rome, Lazio was also a prey in its own AFAS Stadium: it became 2-1 for the Alkmaarders. Felipe Anderson initially put AZ behind, before Jesper Karlsson and Vangelis Pavlidis still got the job done. Karlsson’s goal in particular was to be framed.

Pascal Jansen took office on Thursday with exactly the same eleven names as a week earlier in the Stadio Olimpico. Then Lazio started without star and top scorer Ciro Immobile, who was also not there on Dutch soil. Matteo Cancellieri formed the vanguard with Felipe Anderson and the latter put AZ behind after twenty minutes.

The Brazilian received the ball from Mattia Zaccagni in the hostile sixteen and was given too much time and space: 0-1. With that, Lazio’s virtual backlog was wiped away and AZ seemed to have to start again. Pascal Jansen’s eleven, however, showed resilience and reached the same level seven minutes later. Karlsson came in from the left in his characteristic way and curled beautifully into the far cross: 1-1. AZ was not yet safe; it was closer.

Ivan Provedel prevented the Alkmaarders from taking the lead before tea with a series of excellent saves. They needed until minute 62 for that. Pavlidis got the ball after a nice attack over the left from Milos Kerkez and shot low into the left corner out of reach of Provedel: 2-1. With the margin of two, the cheers started cautiously in the Alkmaar dug-out, which saw the eleven from AZ come close to the third goal several times. However, luck was not on their side for Sven Mijnans, Jens Odgaard and especially Tijjani Reijnders.
