Kolbeinn Sigthorsson is missing from Iceland’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Romania, North Macedonia and Germany. The 64-time international, with a past at Ajax and AZ, is not allowed to take action by the football association due to allegedly a large-scale investigation into alleged sexual disturbances. However, the Icelandic Football Association refuses to disclose the exact reason for Sigthorsson’s absence.

There is speculation in the media in Iceland about Sigthorsson’s alleged role in past sexual abuse, but no evidence can be provided for the time being. In addition to the striker of the Swedish IFK Göteborg, Rúnar Már Sigurjónsson is also not included in the final selection of national coach Arnar Vidarsson for the three international matches in September. The midfielder is missing due to injuries and personal reasons, according to the official statement from the Icelandic Football Association.

It has been restless for some time around the national team of Iceland. The ball started rolling when Gylfi Sigurdsson was arrested earlier this summer for his alleged part in a sex crime case. The charge against Sigurdsson is “child sex offence,” a broad term encompassing multiple forms of child abuse. Sigurdsson was soon released on bail, but the investigation into the Everton attacking midfielder is still ongoing.

Sigurdsson’s name was not initially released by Everton and the Icelandic Football Association, but the media soon knew it was the midfielder. An article appeared in the Icelandic press presenting a young woman’s account of a 2010 gang rape. The article suggested that several players of the national football team had been involved, without specifically names was entered.
