Makkelie made his debut earlier this summer at a major international tournament. The referee from the Netherlands was assigned a total of four matches by UEFA, including the semi-final between England and Denmark (2-1) at Wembley. The final between England and European champions Italy was led by compatriot Björn Kuipers, who announced his retirement as referee shortly after the final battle of the European Championship. Last season, Makkelie was the referee for the first leg between Real Madrid and Chelsea (1-1) in the semi-finals of the Champions League.
