Royston Drenthe remains active in Spain. The now 35-year-old footballer returns to Madrid after a failed adventure at Real Murcia. In the Spanish capital, Drenthe will play for Racing Madrid. There he will play in the highest amateur division of the country.

Drenthe is no stranger to Madrid, as he previously played for Real Madrid. Racing Madrid has been revived after 45 years and wants to assert itself right away. After Drenthe signed with Kozak Boys in the summer of 2019, he left for Racing Murcia in January 2021. That club in turn rented out Drenthe to fellow city rivals Real Murcia, with which the ex-Feyenoord player promoted to the Primera División RFEF, the third tier of Spain. Drenthe came into action for only 89 minutes spread over nine games. This summer he returned to Racing Murcia, although that turned out to be short-lived.

Racing Madrid wants to assert itself immediately upon his return. At his new club, Drenthe will form an attacking couple with Manucho. At his presentation, the 39-year-old Angolan was presented as ‘Cristiano Ronaldo’s ex-teammate at Manchester United’, where he scored one goal in three games. Racing Madrid is next to former employer Racing Murcia and Racing Mérida the third Spanish club of the Racing City Group. Racing Sacramento (United States) and Racing Capri (Italy) are also part of the Racing City Group.

Drenthe has a remarkable career. At the European Under 21 Championship in 2007, national coach Foppe de Haan posted the then Feyenoord player as a left midfielder. That turned out to be a bull’s eye, as he won the tournament with the Netherlands and was named player of the tournament. A transfer to Real Madrid followed, but despite a brilliant debut goal in the Supercopa against Sevilla, he would lose the competition to Marcelo. After many wanderings within and outside Europe, Drenthe returned to the Netherlands. After a short break in his career, he came to Kozak Boys via Xerxes.
