Romelu Lukaku officially returns in the shirt of Internazionale. The Belgian striker returns to the club on a rental basis, with which he became champion in 2021. The lease is valid until June 2023 and Chelsea will receive an amount of eight million euros plus bonuses as a rent. Internazionale will also take over Lukaku’s entire salary.

Inter announces the transfer via video on social media. The footage shows club president Steven Zhang welcoming Lukaku to headquarters. In conversation with the Zhang, Lukaku promises to score ‘a lot of goals’. “I’m happy to be back. Remember three years ago? We were here too. I’ve come back to score goals, I promise.”

Lukaku returns to the club with this rental deal, where he caused a furore from 2019. Belgium’s all-time top scorer took the Scudetto with Internazionale in 2021 for the first time in 11 years. Lukaku formed a royal couple up front that season with Lautaro Martínez. The Belgian (24) and the Argentinian (17) scored 41 goals together, almost half of all goals Internazionale scored in the competition. However, Lukaku did not become top scorer in 2021, which was Cristiano Ronaldo with 29 goals.

However, Lukaku’s adventure at Chelsea was not what he expected. In the summer after the 29-year-old forward became champion with Inter, he left for 113 million euros the Blues† In London, Lukaku did not make it to the undisputed base player. The Belgian came in 26 games for Chelsea and managed to score eight goals. This is the lowest number of league goals Lukaku has ever scored in a season since the 2011/12 season when he moved from his youth club Anderlecht to Chelsea.
