AS Roma suffered a defeat on Thursday evening. When visiting Slavia Prague, Jose Mourinho’s team, who had to watch from the stands due to his four-match suspension, lost without a chance: 2-0. Together with the Czechs, the Romans are at the top of Group G with nine points. Bayer Leverkusen escaped losing points in the absolute final phase and is therefore already assured of wintering: 0-1.
Slavia Prague – AS Roma 2-0
Roma did not exactly manage to put on a good match when visiting the Fortuna Arena. In the first act, Slavia clearly had the better game and created few chances through Mojmir Chytil (over) and Lukas Provod (also over).
After the tea break, the home team did exploit their field dominance. After an initially deflected header, Chytil Vaclav served Jurecka, who finished from close range: 1-0. Immediately after the goal, Slavia goalkeeper Ales Mandous made a good save on an attempt by Andrea Belotti.
In the last quarter Slavia doubled their lead. Lukas Masopust beat goalkeeper Mile Svilar with a nice shot and signed for the final score: 2-0.
FK Qarabaq – Bayer Leverkusen 0-1
Qarabag and Leverkusen, where Jeremie Frimpong kept the bench warm for the first hour, kept each other in balance for a long time. While the Germans did have the better of the game, they were unable to create really well-played opportunities.
Marko Jankovic and Abdellah Zoubir had some chances on behalf of the home team, but saw their shots respectively parried and flying over the crossbar. Yassine Benzia also had a chance, but his effort flew just past the post.
In injury time, Leverkusen earned a penalty after a VAR intervention. Maksim Medvedev’s hand touched the ball and referee Craig Pawson was alerted to a penalty. Victor Boniface made no mistake from eleven meters and decided the match: 0-1.
The three-pointer keeps Leverkusen clear in the Europa League. Xabi Alonso’s team has already collected twelve points. Because Qarabaq as number two only scored six points and Molde as number three only took three points, Leverkusen is already certain of wintering and is almost assured of the group win.
