There has been a lot to cheer about for Ajax fans in recent weeks. The goals are currently falling like ripe apples from the tree at Ajax. In the last six games, which were all won, the team from Amsterdam scored 29 times, an average of 4.8 goals per game. And at the same time it was also good in the back, because only Sporting Portugal managed to find the net against Ajax once in this series. But that one goal was only a footnote afterwards, because after the game it was mainly about Sébastien Haller who scored four times and helped Ajax to a 5-1 victory. It was only the first time since September 27, 1995 that the team from Amsterdam scored five times in a Champions League match, when Ferencváros was defeated 5-1 in Hungary.

Can Ajax again score more than four times? Bet here on the number of goals scored by Ajax!

Yet the victory in Portugal does not seem to be a guarantee that Ajax will repeat that performance this week in its own Johan Cruijff Arena. Of the last ten home matches in the Champions League, Ajax has won only two, against Lille OSC and FC Midtjylland, while the team suffered six defeats. Remarkable results knowing that Ajax has won just eight of the last eleven matches in the billion-dollar ball away from home and only lost once (against Liverpool). Looking at the results in all competitions in 2021, only 2 out of 39 matches were lost this calendar year and both defeats were in Amsterdam. In April AS Roma won 2-1 and at the beginning of August PSV won in the battle for the Johan Cruijff Scale.

Will Ajax have a hard time in its own stadium this time? View the odds here.

Ajax is not the only team that performs well in the Champions League on foreign soil. In the previous three seasons that Besiktas has been active in the Champions League (2009/10, 2016/17 and 2017/18), the Turks have lost only two of the nine away matches in the group stage and have won five times. And not the smallest teams were defeated, because Manchester United (0-1) and Napoli (2-3) among others drew the short straw. The last time Besiktas lost, however, it happened with big numbers, as Dynamo Kiev won 6-0. The man to keep an eye on at Besiktas is Michy Batshuayi. The Belgian has scored three goals in his last four games in all competitions for the Turks and knows what it’s like to score against Ajax. In October 2019, substitute Batshuayi made the winning 1-0 in the Johan Cruijff Arena on behalf of Chelsea in the 86th minute.

Will Michy Batshuayi score another goal against Ajax? Bet on him as the scorer here.
