There is no old sore between Robert Lewandowski and Lionel Messi. The Polish goalscoring machine looked strange at a press conference in Qatar when asked about a possible cooled relationship with Messi. Poland and Argentina meet on Wednesday, November 30. “Why shouldn’t I shake hands with him?” said Lewandowski.

The Ballon d’Or election ceremony was canceled in 2020 due to the corona pandemic. Messi won the prestigious award a year later and asked at the ceremony that Lewandowski be presented with the 2020 Ballon d’Or in recognition of the outstanding season the striker had that year while he was still under contract with Bayern Munich. Lewandowski would then have indicated that he hoped that Messi was serious and that they were not empty words, although he later indicated to Polish media that he was being misinterpreted.

At a press conference ahead of the World Cup in Qatar, a Spanish journalist asked Lewandowski if he would be willing to shake hands with Messi during Poland’s final group match with Argentina. “I don’t quite understand the question,” Lewandowski responded in surprise. “Why shouldn’t I shake hands with him? Everything is fine between me and Messi. We’ve never had a bad experience. Messi is a legend, I see that everywhere at Barcelona now.”

Poland first awaits a group match against Mexico on Tuesday at the World Cup in Qatar. After that, matches with Saudi Arabia (November 26) and Messi’s Argentina (November 30) are scheduled in Group C. As captain, Lewandowski is the great eye-catcher of Poland. Feyenoord player Sebastian Szymanski and ex-Ajax player Arkadiusz Milik are also part of the 26-man selection of national coach Czeslaw Michniewicz.
