PSV has said goodbye to Phillipp Mwene. The wing defender returns to 1. FSV Mainz 05, the club where PSV took him from in the summer of 2021. Mwene eventually came to 73 matches for the team from Eindhoven, 44 of which in the Eredivisie. However, he never became an undisputed basic force.

Mwene’s departure had been imminent for some time. It Eindhovens Dagblad already reported on Monday evening that the Austrian was seen as superfluous, as Sergiño Dest was about to complete his transfer to PSV. Dest is now officially contracted and has already made his debut. PSV can also opt for the left back position in addition to the American for the currently (slightly) injured Patrick van Aanholt, Mauro Júnior and Fredrik Oppegård. 29-year-old Mwene chooses eggs for his money and returns to Mainz, for which he came out 31 times between 2018 and 2021.

Mwene signed a contract until mid-2024 when he came to PSV on a free transfer, so that a transfer fee is probably involved with the transfer. PSV will not disclose the amount, if any. However, the amount was estimated at about one million euros. It ED already expected no problems between Mainz and Mwene and that appears to be the case now. PSV thanks him for the services rendered and wishes him every success with the continuation of his career. Mwene signs a contract in Mainz until mid-2026.

“With Phillipp Mwene we bring in a player that we know well and who fits us perfectly in terms of both quality and personality, so we have worked long and patiently on this acquisition,” Mainz technical director Christian Heidel said through the official channels. “You don’t have to explain to Phillipp what Mainz 05 means to him. He fully identifies with the style of play here and doesn’t need time to get used to it. With his variability and his footballing qualities, but also as a man, he will make our team optimal reinforcement.”
