PSV will investigate what exactly happened on Wednesday evening in the Philips Stadium in the home match against Galatasaray (5-1) in the second preliminary round of the Champions League. A few minutes before the break, after the goal of the Turkish visitors, small riots between supporters could be seen here and there.

It seems that in some places Galatasaray fans were among the PSV supporters and that they were celebrating Emre Kilinc’s goal too exuberantly. On images of, among others ESPNpresenter Milan van Dongen, it seemed that angry PSV supporters were running towards Galatasaray supporters. Earlier during the match, they had to be stopped by the PSV bench, Van Dongen wrote.

“We are investigating it. It’s very annoying. It’s too early to make a statement about it. We’ll come back to it later,” a PSV spokeswoman said The Telegraph know. At that moment and also after the halftime signal, the stadium speaker of the Philips Stadium asked the spectators to remain seated and eventually peace returned.

PSV went on to win 5-1 in the second half, a more than comfortable starting position for next week’s reunion in Istanbul. If PSV progress one round, they may again enter the qualification cycle for the main tournament on 3 or 4 August. The second match in the third heat will then follow on 10 August. Celtic or FC Midtjylland will be the opponent. Benfica, Shakhtar Donetsk, KRC Genk or Spartak Moscow are the last hurdle to the group stage of the Champions League.
