Paris Saint-Germain booked a resounding victory in the Ligue 1 on Saturday evening. At home, the team of coach Mauricio Pochettino was far too strong for Clermont Foot, which was defeated 4-0. Ander Herrera scored twice, while Kylian Mbappe and Idrissa Gueye were responsible for the rest of Paris’ goal production. Georginio Wijnaldum had to settle for a place on the bench. PSG are sovereign in France with fifteen points from five games; Clermont still occupies third place in the ranking with eight points.

Lionel Messi, Neymar, Ángel Di María and Leandro Paredes did not play for PSG on Saturday as announced. Pochettino did not want to take any chances with the four players who played for Argentina and Brazil in the night from Thursday to Friday. Sergio Ramos was also missing against Clermont due to a calf injury. Below the bar, Gianluigi Donnarumma was preferred over Keylor Navas. Mbappé, who left the French national team early during the international match due to a minor injury, had recovered sufficiently to appear at kick-off.

The Parisians were already close to the opening goal in the tenth minute of play. Mbappe had a tailor-made pass for Marquinhos, who nodded dangerously towards the top corner but saw goalkeeper Arthur Desmas make the save. After more than fifteen minutes of play, Clermont also created serious danger; both Jason Berthomier and Johan Gastien placed their respective attempts just wide of the left post. PSG struck for the first time in the twentieth minute of play. A cross from Gueye initially seemed to be processed by Desmas, but the closing post tapped the ball at Herrera’s feet. It was then a breeze for the midfielder to finish: 1-0.

This was the fence of the dam and the home team further increased the pressure. After more than half an hour of play, the Parisian lust for attack was rewarded with a new goal, which again came in the name of Herrera. Once again he got the ball in front of his feet within the five-meter area after Clermont’s weak defense and the Spaniard made the 2-0 from close range. Ten minutes after the break it was Mbappe’s turn. The striker received a custom depth ball from Julian Draxler, rounded the exiting Desmas at top speed and coolly found the empty goal: 3-0. The final chord was played by Gueye, who made it 4-0 after a goal from Mbappé from the rebound.

In the remainder of the second half, PSG slowed down considerably. Not entirely unexpected, as the team will visit Club Brugge next Wednesday in the Champions League and next weekend the competition smasher against Olympique Lyon is on the program. Clermont awaits a home game next Sunday against the Stade Brest of Marco Bizot and associates.
