Bayern Munich joined the last eight in the Champions League on Wednesday. The Record Master already defended a 1-0 win against Paris Saint-Germain in the Allianz Arena in the first leg and won with a double margin three weeks later: 2-0. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Serge Gnabry took care of the production, while Matthijs de Ligt stole the show in the first half with an unparalleled intervention. Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé were invisible.

It was PSG that made amends at the Allianz Arena. The Parisians lost 0-1 at home three weeks ago, despite two rejected goals from Mbappé. The star attacker was then unable to kick off because he had just returned from an injury. That was possible on Wednesday; in the absence of Neymar, Mbappé formed a two-man vanguard with Lionel Messi. At Julian Nagelsmann’s Bayern, Matthijs de Ligt was the only Dutchman in the starting eleven.

De Ligt seized the absolute leading role in the first half. After half an hour in which both teams got no further than handing out some pinpricks, Yann Sommer made a horrific mistake. The Bayern goalkeeper lost the ball close to his goal, so that PSG midfielder Vitinha got the leather at his feet. The Portuguese immediately lashed out, but saw De Ligt stretch out on the line and work the ball to the side like a kind of second goalkeeper. The the Dutch-international cried out, as the margin still remained in favor of Bayern.

On the other side, Marquinhos should have been replaced shortly before due to an injury. That was it in terms of highlights in the first half. Remarkably enough, Nordi Mukiele – Marguinhos’ veranger – was also injured in this and seventeen-year-old El Chadaille Bitshiabu came on after the break. He saw his team escape with a fright seven minutes after his entrance. Choupo-Moting headed in a cross from the left, but by touching Thomas Müller, who was offside, the goal was dashed.

There were many question marks surrounding the cancellation of the goal, but moments later it was still a hit for Choupo-Moting. The Cameroonian was served by Leon Goretzka just before the Paris goal and only had to tap in: 1-0. It was thanks to Sommer that that position remained for a while. The Swiss had a great reflex on a Sergio Ramos header, recovering his blunder from the first act.

Nagelsmann brought, among others, Leroy Sané and with the wing attacker Bayern came close to 2-0 several times. Another substitute eventually made it. Gnabry received the ball from the substitute João Cancelo, took the ball with him in one movement and outwitted Gianluigi Donnarumma: 2-0. The billion dollar ball therefore strands for PSG in the eighth finals again. Also had to last season les Parisians already bow in the last sixteen, then after a diptych with Real Madrid.
