Cristiano Ronaldo still insists that the opening goal against Uruguay should be credited. It seemed for a moment that the star attacker still grazed the ball at a cross from Bruno Fernandes, but FIFA awarded the goal to the latter. Ronaldo doesn’t like that at all, but his trainer does see the fun in it. Fernando Santos laughed when asked about his number seven’s reaction.

In the 54th minute of the World Cup match between Portugal and Uruguay, Bruno Fernandes sent a cross towards the penalty area, after which Ronaldo headed in and plopped the ball into the far corner. The attacker then celebrated that goal as if he had made it himself and after Ronaldo was told afterwards that Fernandes was credited with the goal, he insisted that he had given the ball the final push himself.

Fernandes himself also thought that Ronaldo had made him and understands that his captain wants the 1-0 to his name at all costs. “Goals are important for players like him,” the Manchester United midfielder said. “I also celebrated as if he made it, because I had the feeling that Cristiano was still touching my cross. It was also my intention to play him. In the end, the most important thing is that we are through to the next round.”

Santos also wanted to emphasize that at the press conference afterwards, but he was still asked about the 1-0 and how much Ronaldo would like to have that goal to his name. CR7 after all, he stubbornly insisted that he grazed the ball and wants FIFA to take action. The burst of laughter from the national coach spoke volumes. “Our team played very well and the rest doesn’t matter to me at all,” said Santos after he was laughed at.
