The FA has launched an investigation into match fixing at Arsenal, reports the Athletic Wednesday night. The English Football Association is looking at a suspicious yellow card for a player from the gunners in the first half of the current season. According to the reports, the name of the player in question is known, but it is not (yet) released due to privacy reasons.

The association has launched the investigation after various reports from betting shops about ‘suspicious bets’. According to the Athletic there would have been a disproportionate bet on the bet that an Arsenal player would take a yellow card in a Premier League game in the current season.

The sports newspaper has asked the FA for a response, and the association acknowledges that the matter is under investigation. “The FA is aware of the situation in question and is conducting an investigation,” the brief statement read. The Athletic reports that the identity of the suspect is known, but that his name will not be disclosed in consultation. Several bookmakers would have confirmed the story, although it is not known how much money the gamblers may have earned with the bets.

Betting on the details of sporting events, such as yellow cards, is a form of betting known as spot fixing. A rare phenomenon in England, according to reports because of the ‘high salaries’. In the Netherlands, Tom Beugelsdijk was discredited last season for a similar case, although the defender denies involvement in match fixing.
