Peet Bijen has decided to end his playing career with immediate effect. This is reported by FC Emmen, the employer of Bijen. Due to persistent injuries, the 27-year-old defender did not see enough prospects to continue his career. Bijen especially caused a furore at FC Twente, where he went through the youth academy and eventually came out for the first time 144 times.

Bijen exchanged BWO Hengelo in 2006 to join the youth academy of the Tukkers. In 2015, the central defender definitively joined FC Twente’s first team. There Bijen came to 144 games, twelve goals and five assists. The highlight of his time at FC Twente was the 2018/19 season, in which he convincingly became champion of the Kitchen Champion Division with FC Twente and played 35 times. In the summer of 2020, Bijen went to ADO Den Haag, where he already suffered a nasty ankle injury after a few months. Partly because of this, he did not get further than seven appearances for the Hagenaren.

In the summer of 2021, Bijen switched to FC Emmen, but he also failed to get completely fit at the then Keuken Kampioen Division club. As a result, the defender experienced the championship year of the Drenthe club from the sidelines. Only in the final match of the Kitchen Champion Division against his former employer ADO Den Haag did trainer Dick Lukkien allow him another fifteen minutes of playing time, after a rehabilitation of nineteen months.

Bijen’s contract in Emmen expired this summer, but Bijen, who was born in Hengelo, still got the opportunity to train and get fit again. For a moment the defender seemed to be on his way back. In the preparation for this season, for example, he played in a number of practice matches for Emmen, but the defender continued to suffer from his ankle. For that reason, Bijen has now decided to end his career. It is not yet clear what the 27-year-old mandekker’s next steps will be.
