Art Langeler will definitely be the new trainer of PEC Zwolle, reports the NOS. The appointment follows four days after the resignation of John Stegeman, who was put on hold by the club management of PEC after the defeat against FC Emmen (3-2). Langeler will be primarily responsible at PEC with effect from April 1. Until then, Lee-Roy Echteld will do the honors.

Langeler currently holds the position of director of football development at the KNVB. The coach’s contract with the football association continues until April 1. PEC expressed the wish to make Alfons Groenendijk ultimately responsible in the meantime and even held talks with the former trainer of Willem II, among others, but on closer inspection Groenendijk saw no further. “As an in-between pope you don’t come in very strongly,” Groenendijk said Leidsch Dagblad. “Players also know that you will take a step back in a few weeks, that affects your authority.”

Sources within the club now report that PEC is in talks with Langeler about the final details, but that it is certain that he is the man who will be in front of the group in Zwolle from April 1. Until then, Echteld will take on the task as head coach. Echteld came over from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2020, where he was responsible for the second team. In the past year he acted as assistant to Stegeman.

Langeler is no stranger to PEC Zwolle. He previously served in the club’s youth academy and was at the helm of the main squad from 2010 to 2013. Zwolle was promoted to the Eredivisie in 2012 under his leadership. Langeler then worked for four years as PSV’s head of youth education and was active as national coach of the Dutch Juniors between 2016 and 2018.
