The chance that Anwar El Ghazi can play for Morocco at the World Cup in Qatar has dwindled. A few weeks ago, the attacker announced that he wanted to transfer to the national team of Morocco. However, El Ghazi announced last night that the paperwork has still not been completed. In their own words, participation in the World Cup will now be ‘short day’.

The PSV attacker has two A-international matches for the Netherlands to his name, but last played for the the Dutch in 2015. He recently dropped that he wanted to defend the colors of Morocco and that only administrative actions stood in the way of a definitive switch. After the 1-2 win against FK Bodø/Glimt in the Europa League, El Ghazi announced that it does not want to go smoothly with the switch.

Bee ESPN told El Ghazi that the paperwork has still not been completed. “I said recently that they were busy, but there are no updates yet. I think it is complicated, there is a lot of paperwork that needs to be done and that is still not completely settled.” Since the World Cup in Qatar already starts on November 20, time is running out. “Yes, it will be a short day. So whether it will be ready in time for the World Cup: I have no idea yet.”

The attacker, who was taken over from Aston Villa by PSV last summer for more than three million euros, has played twelve times for the Eindhoven team so far. He scored five goals and three assists. Morocco is in Qatar in the group with Croatia, Belgium and Canada. The Lions of the Atlas start the final tournament on November 23 against Croatia.
