Oliver Kahn is not pleased with the way in which Pini Zahavi has led the discussions about the future of David Alaba in recent times. The agent tried to get the most out of the 28-year-old fullback’s contract negotiations for him and his client, but ‘completely ignored reality’, Kahn believes. Alaba announced his departure from Bayern Munich in February, after playing for the club for thirteen years.

Alaba received several contract proposals from Bayern for a longer stay in Southern Germany, but resolutely rejected them, with which he closed the door of the Allianz Arena permanently after thirteen successful years. According to Kahn, who holds a board position at Bayern, Zahavi’s actions are the basis for this. “I was disappointed, but Alaba’s agent is too far from reality,” Kahn concludes in conversation with Kicker. “That’s a shame, because we love Alaba. He is an extraordinary person and has always been candid with us. We have tried everything to keep him longer, but we have not been able to reach an agreement.”

Interest in Alaba has increased in recent months, now that top clubs see the opportunity to take over the Austrian international on a transfer-free basis. From England, Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea have expressed their interest, while Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus are also hunting for the left leg’s signature. Despite this, a move to Spain seems most likely, as Real Madrid and Barcelona are serious about making the transfer. Alaba managed to conquer nine national titles in his time at Bayern and also won the Champions League twice.

Kahn admitted in the interview with Kicker also to know that he will do everything he can to keep other seasonings on board. The 86-time German international is referring to players such as Manuel Neuer, Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Müller, who prove their worth every week for the reigning national champion. “Why not consider renewing their contracts if they play the way they play now?” Said Kahn. The three will remain at Bayern until the summer of 2023.
