Feyenoord has been fined by the KNVB for lighting fireworks prior to the competition match against Ajax. The people of Rotterdam have to pay 7,500 euros. A statement has yet to be made about the fireworks and the disturbances during the cup match with the team from Amsterdam. In that duel, Davy Klaassen, among others, was hit on the head with an object from the audience.

The competition meeting between Feyenoord and Ajax last January was mainly characterized by the high nets and the subsequent camera angle. Due to the security measures, ESPN felt compelled to film from the top of the stadium, which was a thorn in the side of viewers at home. Prior to the game, Feyenoord’s fanatical supporters set off fireworks, for which the club has now been fined.

The football association speaks of ‘the setting off of a considerable amount of fireworks’. White and green smoke pots were set off behind one of the targets. Bengal fire was also seen. The game eventually ended in a 1-1 draw. After Igor Paixão had shot Feyenoord ahead in the first half, Klaassen equalized after the break.

The prosecutor’s ruling is an advance on what is yet to come for Feyenoord, as the cup meeting between the two clubs last week turned into an inky black evening. After the game had to be briefly halted due to fireworks, Klaassen got an object on his head after one hour of play, which resulted in a head injury and the game being halted for a long time. A statement about those events will follow later.
