The race between Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Marseille was completely derailed on Sunday evening. Gross fouls were committed, players would have spit at each other and in injury time there was a fight. In total, referee Jérôme Brisard dealt seventeen cards, five of which were red. Neymar also had to move in with a direct red card after giving Álvaro González a tap on the back of the head. PSG’s Brazilian star player was in constant conflict with the Marseille defender during the match and accused him of racism. An hour after the match, Neymar made himself heard on Twitter.

Already in the first half, Neymar indicated that he felt racially treated by González. During a confrontation with the defender the Brazilian said in front of the cameras: ‘Racismo no’, or: ‘No racism’. Gregoire Margotton, reporter of Téléfoot and also a highly esteemed journalist in France, reports that González would have said, “Shut up, dirty monkey. It is not clear if this was actually said, but Neymar and González kept looking for each other during the match.

When deep in injury time the flame hit the pan and Brisard went red four times because of a fight, he was called to the side by the VAR. The video referee saw Neymar tap González on the back of the head at the time of the riot. Neymar got a red card and as he left the field he turned to the fourth official. He said he did it because González had made a racist remark. Neymar’s anger was visible and still not subsided after an hour. He climbed into the pen and said he didn’t regret his action. “I only regret that I didn’t hit that bastard in the face,” Neymar said.

Afterwards, Neymar Jr. insists that he was racist. André Villas-Boas of opponent Olympique Marseille: ‘I don’t know if it’s true, but racism is unacceptable.

Neymar gets a lot of support on Twitter. His tweet was retweeted more than 70,000 times in half an hour and received almost 300,000 likes in a short time. Marseille coach André Villas-Boas did not want to pre-empt things when he was asked about the alleged racist statements of his player. “It would be serious if that happened, but I don’t think so and I hope not. What I did see is that Di María spit at Álvaro. Those are things we have to get rid of quickly in the world of football.”
