Newcastle United have reached the final of the EFL Cup. At home, Southampton were beaten 2-1. A week ago, the away game ended in a 0-1 victory for the Magpies and thus the club qualified for the final to be played at Wembley. Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United is most likely the opponent in this.

Newcastle is doing well this season. In the Premier League, the team is neatly third and due to the double win in the diptych with Southampton, the team of manager Eddie Howe has a serious chance of winning the first cup since 1955, when the FA Cup was conquered. Sven Botman was again in the base at Newcastle on Tuesday evening and played the entire match.

Newcastle immediately went on the attack at St. James’ Park and the reward soon came. Kieran Trippier served Sean Longstaff after five minutes of play and the latter pushed in the 1-0. Fifteen minutes later, the home crowd rallied again. Once again it was crowd favorite Longstaff who hit the mark. Joe Willock went on an adventure, passed the ball to Miguel Almirón, and his withdrawn cross was shot in by the 25-year-old Englishman: 2-0.

Southampton reacted quite quickly. Before the break, it was Che Adams who hit the target with a huge bang of over 25 meters. It became even more exciting when Bruno Guimarães received a red card ten minutes before the end. However, Southampton failed to force the equalizer and force a place in the final. Manchester United will defend a 3-0 lead against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday evening. It therefore seems obvious that the final battle of the EFL Cup will be between Newcastle and United. The final is scheduled for Sunday, February 26.
