Virgil van Dijk is back on the training field and is training again with a ball, according to the photos that Liverpool uploaded to his website on Saturday. In addition, manager Jürgen Klopp gave an update on the situation of the 29-year-old defender at the press conference in the run-up to the game with Leeds United next Monday. “He is on track,” said the trainer.

Van Dijk has been working since October to recover from a serious knee injury that he sustained in the game against Everton (2-2) in October. Although no concrete length of his recovery period has been stated, Klopp believes that the rehabilitation of his pupil is progressing well. Shortly after the manager’s press conference, Liverpool published some photos of a training session by Van Dijk on the club site, who also shared the images on Twitter and Instagram.

Whether the positive claims mean that the central defender can take action at the European Championship is as yet unclear. Last month, Klopp announced that he does not think it is likely that Van Dijk will already complete matches on behalf of the the Dutch this summer. “Of course it is not my decision whether Virgil will go to the European Championship or not. But with the information I have at the moment, I say it is not very likely,” said the manager of the Reds.

Frank de Boer also spoke in March about the possibility that the 38-time international will be there at the European Championship. “Anything he can contribute to Liverpool and possibly us would be a bonus. He goes onto the field and so there can be all kinds of setbacks. And if he faces setbacks, it could mean he can’t play games for Liverpool. Then I can imagine that they say there: ‘Nice and nice, but you just focus on next season.’ ”, De Boer concluded.
