Rob Penders returns to NAC Breda, the club announced on Thursday through the official channels. The former assistant coach will be responsible for the Under-21 of NAC, the highest youth team, starting next season. With this, Penders returns to the club where he played as a player for eleven seasons. The former football player will sign a contract until mid-2023.

Penders and NAC were linked for years. The former defender and captain played 276 games on behalf of the Breda team and went to work in the youth academy after his career. “With Rob we are once again bringing a club icon home”, head of youth academy Eric Hellemons said on Thursday in a reaction. “He is a very experienced trainer with many specific competences and qualities. Because of his experience with the first team of NAC, he can give young boys like no other what is asked. ”

In March 2019, Penders, who was replacing Mitchell van der Gaag as an interim trainer at the time, was told by phone that he was being thanked for his services. “Two years ago something unpleasant happened, but I have always been very down to earth,” says Penders. “Last year I went back about five times and it always felt good. It was always a warm welcome and nice to see everyone again. I am eager to get back to work as a trainer and certainly with an Under 21 team. ”

With the return of Penders, NAC is not bringing back a club icon for the first time this season. Earlier it was announced that Ton Lokhoff will be the new technical director from 1 April and on Wednesday the club announced the return of Anthony Lurling. Lurling will train the Under-15 of NAC and will be added to the technical staff of the A-selection next season as assistant coach of Maurice Steijn. Lurling previously worked as a trainer in the youth academy at PSV and is finishing the current season in Eindhoven.
