Mario van den Ende has serious doubts about the collaboration between Danny Makkelie and Rob Dieperink as referee and VAR respectively at Ajax – Feyenoord (2-3). The former top arbitrator states that there is no question of ‘independent arbitration at all’, because Makkelie plays a mentor role for Dieperink.

After the Classic, much revolves around Quilindschy Hartman’s foul on Mohammed Kudus. Feyenoord’s left back stuck out his leg, but was too late and knocked down Kudus, who would otherwise have been away on the sidelines. Hartman got away without a second yellow card and was immediately taken aside by his trainer Arne Slot. “But the VAR cannot intervene in the event of a second yellow card,” says Van den Ende.

The former top referee has more difficulty with the course of events surrounding a kick on the foot of Owen Wijndal by Feyenoord attacker Oussama Idrissi. Wijndal’s ankle doubled, Idrissi got away with yellow. Deep into the second half, Mohammed Kudus appeared to deliberately step on Dávid Hancko’s upper leg. Kudus got away without a card, but Feyenoord did get a free kick.

“The VAR can certainly intervene in the violations of Idrissi and Kudus,” says Van den Ende. “Don’t forget that VAR Dieperink is coached as a referee by Makkelie. So there is no question of independent VAR at all.” Makkelie himself did not want to respond to either incident afterwards. The arbitrator stood by ESPN stand firmly behind his decision not to give Hartman a second card.
