Olympique Lyon was kicked out of the Coupe de France by AS Monaco on Wednesday evening. The cup match between the two French top clubs was one of two faces: in the first half, Monaco had nothing to say against the much stronger Lyon, which hit the aluminum three times, but after a red card for Lyon defender Sinaly Diomande the match: 0-2. For Memphis Depay it was an extremely frustrating evening, on which he also got yellow from the female referee Stéphanie Frappart for an alleged schwalbe. Depay reacted furiously to that decision.

Lyon ruled the first half, but miraculously, not a single shot from the home team went into Monaco’s goal. Maxwell Cornet aimed just over after a nice cut. Memphis Depay put Lucas Paquetá to work after a nice dribble, who shot just wide. Cornet came even closer after that, who hit the post and crossbar in two different attempts. A header from Marcelo went between those two chances on the crossbar. In the first half, Lyon coach Rudi Garcia was sent off with red by Frappart due to comments on the pipes.

Monaco did not fire a single shot on goal in the first half and seemed to concede a goal six minutes after the break. The goal of the broken Cornet, however, was disallowed due to offside. On the other side of the field, the game turned completely when Sinaly Diomande touched Youssouf Fofana’s face with a high leg. The Lyon defender received his second yellow card and Monaco a penalty kick, which was used by Wissam Ben Yedder: 0-1.

Eight minutes later, the visitors doubled their lead thanks to Kevin Volland, who fired the ball into the roof of the goal from the right side of the penalty area: 0-2. Depay then claimed a penalty because he would have been knocked down by Fafana. Instead, however, Frappart pulled a yellow card for Depay for an alleged schwalbe. The the Dutch striker made a lot of noise to express his dissatisfaction about this. A minute later he was changed.
